Rick has more than 30 years experience as a lawyer. He is a 1971 graduate of the University of North Carolina where he was a Morehead Scholar. He is a 1974 graduate of the University of North Carolina Law School and clerked for a federal judge in North Carolina before moving to Texas where he was a prosecutor for the Harris County District Attorney’s Office (1977-1980) before working in the trial section at Butler & Binion (1980-1985) where he was elected partner. He started this firm in 1986.
He has tried more than 100 jury cases first chair in both state and federal court. In addition, he has published more than 25 legal papers and spoken to lawyers and physicians including the American Home Appliance Manufacturers (Chicago), the State Bar of Texas, the Houston Bar Association, the University of Texas Law School, University of Houston Law School and South Texas College of Law. He was invited to publish articles on Lasik litigation in two publications in 2002 and has been a keynote speaker at meetings of refractive surgeons including the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ASCRS). He was a member of the gold medal winning team at the 2006 ASCRS Challenge Cup in San Francisco on the topic, “How to Avoid Lasik Litigation”.
His outside interests include service as a member of the Central Selection Committee of the John Motley Morehead Foundation at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, co-chair of the 2006 Morehead Alumni Forum, member of the board of directors of the General Alumni Association of the University of North Carolina and past president of Tanglewood Homeowners’ Association. He was licensed in North Carolina in 1974 and in Texas in 1977. He speaks German.
He is responsible for most of the cases referred to under "Significant Litigation".
